Waipiata is situated on the Otago Central Rail Trail and is a popular stopover for cyclists. Waipiata today boasts the Waipiata Hotel, a popular stopover for railtrail enthusiasts and locals alike, and several self contained and Bed & Breakfasts to chose from for accommodation
The iron bridge is a real feature, locally known as the Green Bridge and is the only flood free crossing of the Taieri River in the Maniototo.
Waipiata was born out of the railway camp that sprung up as the Central Otago Railway line was being put in. When a Rabbit Processing factory was established in 1919 it provided further employment for 100 employees but sadly it closed down in the 1930’s when prices slumped. Today Waipiata provides access to the Otago Central Rail Trail and is also a popular spot for kayaking on the Taieri River.
