A night or more at the Mill B&B in Oturehua, Central Otago is a wonderful way to share the dream of hosts Maureen and Duncan Butcher to live in a Central Otago hideaway redolent with history and country charm.

In 1886 locally quarried stone was used to construct the mill for grinding wheat once grown in the Ida Valley. In the 1900’s the Mill closed with the coming of the Central Otago rail line but reopened briefly during the First World War. It’s now hard to believe that for much of the 20th century it was mostly a derelict; convenient though leaky hay shed. Since the 1980’s a number of owners have been involved in the slow process of the reconstruction of this lovely building. When Maureen and Duncan purchased the Mill in the 1990s a lot of the reconstruction was complete but some internal changes and the garden and grounds are very much their own work. The Mill is situated very close to the township of Oturehua and just passed the Hayes Engineering works.

This is also the home of ‘Ida Valley Saffron’. Maureen and Duncan started growing this exotic spice four years ago and their crop is now producing a high grade product.
This process is interesting to see and if you are there in the Autumn- you can help pick or pluck the saffron flowers and be part of the production of Saffron.
