The tiny town of Kokonga (meaning Bending River) situated on the
Otago Central Rail Trail was established in the 1890’s as a railway settlement.
It started life as a railway workers camp and later became a more permanent settlement with the establishment of a school, a store, church, railway station and post office among other things.
The Basalt stone used for the construction of the magnificent Dunedin Railway Station
also came from the Kokonga area and provided employment for many.
However Kokonga went into decline when the railway line was closed in the 1980’s.
The opening of the Otago Central Rail Trail as a cycling route
in recent years has seen a resurgence in the area.
Kokonga now offers Backpackers and Lodge accommodation
from where to explore the Rail Trail.
