Hyde, Central Otago, New Zealand

Hyde Sign

Hyde,is located between Ranfurly and Middlemarch on the Central Otago Rail Trail and State Highway 87.
Hyde is a small rural community, where you will find the Central Otago Hotel.
The hotel has been beautifully restored to provide bed and breakfast + backpackers accommodation and the Hyde Café.
A great place for rail trailers and travellers to stop for refreshments or spend the night.

The scenery around Hyde is dominated by the Rock and Pillar Range and the Taieri River.
The huge skies and remarkable cloud formations are spectacular year round,.

The region was first settled with gold mining in the 1860's, and became a busy place in the 1890’s with the Central Otago Railway linking Dunedin to Central Otago. During that time the area had several hotels, a blacksmith, a butcher, bakers, saddlers, stone masons, carpenters, shoe makers, a wheelwright, carriers, a courthouse, schools, a post office, two churches and a railway station.

Hyde was also well known for its clay, which is still exported out of the region.
.Hyde is also the place where on 4 June 1943 The Cromwell to Dunedin express derailed in a sharp bend and crashed
killing 21 passengers and  reducing the train to wreckage.
